About My Work

Surface, texture, dimensionality—these have all been drivers of my artwork since I began as a jewelry artist 20 years ago.  In 2007 I moved away from working with metal, but the same things still interest me and I am now exploring them in work on and of paper.

I particularly like working with paper because it is a marvelously generous medium: it is absorbent and it is reflective; you can bend it, cut it, mold it, build with it.  I use it as a sculptural material in many pieces that are three dimensional but not free standing, or pieces that incorporate relief or collaged elements. Paper is also my base for other materials, including ink, acrylic, miscellaneous objects, and, especially, watercolor.  Where paper is generous, watercolor is cranky and unforgiving.  But I love its vibrancy, transparency, and fluidity, the way it both combines with the paper and yearns to escape.

At the same time, my work is not entirely materials driven, but frequently arises from a concept that intrigues or challenges me.  This is most apparent in the Form Does Not Differ from Emptiness series, which arose from my own Zen practice and was the subject of a solo show at San Francisco Zen Center in June 2010; and The Feminine Mystique pieces, which were done for Mina Dresden Gallery in December 2010.  The Blue series, Surfaces and Depths, and Personal Geology also have a conceptual underpinning.
